What to put on an estimate
A good estimate lets the customer say yes without a phone call to ask what's included. Cover these in plain words:
- Scope. What you will do, where, and with what. "Patch and paint two bedroom walls, one coat primer, two coats finish, customer picks color" beats "paint bedroom."
- Line items. Break the job into labor and materials with a quantity and price for each, so the total doesn't look like a number pulled from the air.
- Exclusions. Say what's not included (moving furniture, hauling debris, permits, hidden damage found once walls are open). This heads off most arguments later.
- Valid-until date. Material prices and your schedule change. A date (often 30 days) tells the customer how long the price holds.
- Payment terms. Deposit, if any, when the balance is due, and how you take payment.
This is a general template, not legal or tax advice. Rules on contracts, deposits, and sales tax vary by state and trade, so check what applies to you.
